Lessons from Jesus

Mark 1:9-14 (NIV)

Three incredible things that happened to Jesus.

  1. His baptism
  2. His Father affirmed Him
  3. He was tempted by the Devil

1. Why was Jesus Baptized?

Matthew 3:13-15 (NIV)

“Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. But John tried to deter him saying, ‘I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?’ Jesus replied, ‘Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.”

Jesus was baptized to set an example for us.

Acts 2:38 (NIV)

“…Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

2. Why was Jesus publicly affirmed by God?

God was letting us know what He thinks about His son Jesus.

Matthew 17:5 (NIV)

“…This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”

John 12:28-30 (NIV)

“Father, glorify your name!” Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.” The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him. Jesus said, “This voice was for your benefit, not mine.”

God was setting an example for parents of the need to affirm your children.

3. Why was Jesus tempted?

Jesus was tempted to show us how to overcome temptation.

Deuteronomy 8:3 (NIV)

“…Man does not live on bread alone...”

Deuteronomy 6:16 (NIV)

“Do not put the Lord your God to the test…”

Deuteronomy 6:13 (NIV)

“Fear (worship) the Lord you God and serve Him only…”
