Why We Can Trust the Bible

ROOTED: Why We Can Trust the Bible

“The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.” – Isaiah 40:8

Can we really trust the Bible?
This is a question many have asked, whether they grew up in church or not. In a world filled with skepticism and shifting cultural narratives, many challenge the Bible’s reliability. Some claim it has been changed over time, that it is full of contradictions, or that it is just another religious text among many.

But the truth is the Bible is not just another book—it is the inspired, preserved, and living Word of God. It stands alone in historical accuracy, manuscript evidence, fulfilled prophecy, and archaeological confirmation.

Yesterday, we at Issachar Church took a deep dive into the undeniable proof that the Bible can be trusted. If you missed it—or if you want a refresher—here’s a breakdown of four powerful reasons why we can be ROOTED in God’s Word with confidence.

1. The Bible is Unique Among All Books

The Bible is unlike any other book in history, structure, and unity.

What makes it stand out?
  • Written by 40 different authors from diverse backgrounds—kings, prophets, fishermen, tax collectors, military generals, shepherds, and doctors.
  • Spanning over 1,600 years—no other religious book has this kind of historical depth.
  • Written in three languages—Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek.
  • Written on three continents—Asia, Africa, and Europe.
  • One unified message—God’s plan to redeem humanity through Jesus Christ.

Most religious books are written by one person with no eyewitnesses to verify their claims.

For example:
Religious Book     # of Authors        Time Span  Eyewitnesses?
Bible40+1,600 yearsYes (many)
Quran1 (Muhammad)23 yearsNo
Book of Mormon1 (Joseph Smith)3 yearsNo
Buddhist SutrasMultipleUncertainNo

Despite its complexity and diversity, the Bible remains historically cohesive—an impossibility without divine authorship.

Luke 24:27 – "Beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself."

2. Early Manuscripts Prove the Bible’s Accuracy

How do we know the Bible hasn’t been changed?
  • The Bible has thousands of ancient copies that scholars have compared to confirm its accuracy.
  • The time gap between original writings and our earliest copies is shorter than any other ancient text.

Comparison of Manuscript Evidence
Ancient Work     Written         Earliest Copy Time Gap # of Copies Textual Accuracy
Homer's Iliad800 BC100 AD900 years643~95%
Plato's Republic400 BC900 AD1,300 years7~99%
New Testament40–100 AD130 AD30 years24,000+99.5%

The New Testament has more surviving manuscripts than any other ancient document. Its 99.5% textual accuracy proves that it has been faithfully preserved over time.

Isaiah 40:8 – "The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever."

3. The Mathematical Impossibility of Prophecy Fulfillment

The Bible contains over 1,800 prophecies, 351 of which describe the coming Messiah. Jesus fulfilled 324 of these during His life, death, and resurrection.

Could this happen by chance?
Mathematician Peter Stoner analyzed the probability of one man fulfilling just 8 of these prophecies:
1 in 10¹⁷ (1 followed by 17 zeros)

Illustration: Imagine covering the entire state of Texas in silver dollars, two feet deep. Now, take one coin, mark it, and mix it in. The chance of picking that exact coin on the first try is the same probability of one man fulfilling just 8 biblical prophecies.
Now imagine fulfilling 48 prophecies—that probability is 1 in 10¹⁵⁷ (1 followed by 157 zeros)!
Jesus fulfilled 324.

John 5:46 – "If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me."

4. Archaeology Confirms the Bible’s Historical Accuracy

Skeptics have long claimed the Bible is full of historical myths—but archaeology has repeatedly confirmed biblical events, cities, and figures.

Some of the most remarkable discoveries:
DiscoverySignificanceYear Found
Hittite CivilizationOnce thought fictional, now confirmed1906
Sodom and GomorrahCities destroyed by fire, matching biblical accounts1960s
Pool of Bethesda (John 5:2)Once thought a myth, later excavated1888
Caiaphas’ OssuaryConfirms the high priest who judged Jesus1990
Pilate InscriptionProves Pontius Pilate was a real historical figure1961

Sir William Ramsay, an atheist archaeologist, set out to disprove the Bible but was overwhelmed by the evidence and became a Christian.

Jeremiah 33:3 – "Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know."

Final Thoughts: Are You ROOTED in the Bible?
In a world filled with doubts, the Bible remains unshaken. It is historically verified, mathematically undeniable, archaeologically confirmed, and spiritually transformative.
If the Bible is true, then we must build our lives on it.

Colossians 2:6-7 – "So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness."
